From a transcription of the John Bassett (1789-1866) manuscript (1815) written when he was 26 years of age.
Excerpt -
"I was born June 2nd 1789 at Ashover of parents who were honest and but too indulging. They always confessed themselves to be destitute of religion altho' they attended the Established church. My father attended regularly for a great many years being one of the singers. They were the parents of nine children, three of whom died in infancy and one died when near 18 years of age in the year 1801, having first made her peace with God."
