Rita Mary (Miller) Bass
Rita Mary (Miller) Bass 82, of Sarasota, FL, passed away peacefully on March 3, 2022 from complications due to myasthenia gravis.
Rita was born in Lansing, Michigan to Carl and Loretta Miller, on September 30, 1939. Following graduation from St. Mary's High School in 1957 she did clerical work at Lansing's Oldsmobile factory for two years until studying speech pathology at Michigan State University, earning a bachelor's degree in 1963. After graduating from MSU Rita taught for the Lansing School District for 30 years. Rita married Jim Bass on August 28, 1975; they were married 34 years. In 1993 Rita and Jim became snowbirds spending winters in Sarasota and summers in East Lansing until making Sarasota her fulltime home in 2015.
Rita was the glue that held our family together, making sure we all stayed in touch, despite the miles that separated us. She never missed the opportunity to celebrate special occasions. Rita was always upbeat and fun to be around. She loved cats, was an avid golfer and a cancer survivor. Rita enjoyed lite beer, sitting in the sun, playing cards, dinner out with friends, shopping, manicures, pedicures, Christmas lights and reading.
Rita is survived by three stepchildren; Michael Bass (Kim), Mary Kramer (Jeff) and Scott Bass, four grandchildren; Lana Bass, Ben Kramer, Scott Bass and Lauren Groff and five great grandchildren; Quinn Kramer, Gavin Kramer, Nolan Kramer, Beckett Chang and Ellie Groff.
In addition to her parents, Rita was preceded in death by her husband Jim, siblings Gerald and Noreen and her cat Bugsy.
Though we experience the sadness of her passing, we can share the best memories of our time with Rita in a celebration of a life well lived. Join us on March 26, 2022, between 12:00 and 3:00, at the Casa Del Sol Clubhouse, 5855 Casa Del Sol Blvd., Sarasota, FL 34233. We will serve her favorite dishes and decorate in her favorite colors. Dress for a gathering of friends rather than a funeral.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be given to the American Cancer Society. Rita's family wants to thank her friends and neighbors for their help and support.
