Death of a Good Woman
Mrs. S.S. Bassett Passed Away at Her Home in Paris, Missouri Wednesday
From Thursday’s Daily
Death is always sad, but there are times when it is not only a personal and family misfortune, but a community loss as well, and this is particularly true in the present instance. The death of Mrs. Fanny Bassett will bring sorrow to many hearts besides her own immediate family, in her own community and in all the northern portion of Missouri. She was recognized by all who knew her as a true gentle woman whose sphere of influence was as wide as her acquaintance, and whose influence was of that elevating nature, that bettered all with whom she came in contact.
Mrs. Bassett was the wife of one of Paris’ oldest citizens, Mr. S. S. Bassett, who has been engaged in mercantile business there for many years. She was the mother of a large family consisting of five sons and two daughters. Before her marriage she was a Miss Giddings, daughter of Brack Giddings, one of the pioneers of Monroe county. Mrs. H. P. Jennings of this city is a sister.
Through her marriage she became related to her husband’s family, which is also a large one, and many of whom reside here. She will be sadly missed by all, and more particularly by her aged husband, whose companion and helpmeet she was for so many long and eventful years, and by the sons and daughters she bore and watched grow into worthy and useful manhood and womanhood.
No woman of this section of the state exercised a wider or more beneficial sphere of influence. In the home circle, in the church, in society, with all its social relations, she was honored and respected, for her true worth. She will be missed as long as one remains alive who came within the range of her influence.
Mrs. Bassett was more than 70 years of age, and for many weeks had been a patient and uncomplaining sufferer. Death came as a relief from suffering. She will be buried in the cemetery at Paris, tomorrow, at 2:30 p.m.
To her husband and her family and the many relatives, who will be saddened by her death, the Monitor extends its sympathy.
