Roy O. Bass Ends His Life
Constable For Fort Mill Township Shoots Self
Funeral Rites Conducted
Rock Hill, S.C., Jan. 18 ? Roy Oscar Bass, for six years magistrate?s constable for Fort Mill township, died Monday afternoon as a result of self-inflicted wounds, according to Coroner M. P. Nichols.
Mr. Bass, who had been in declining health for some time, shot himself through the head with a .38 caliber pistol while in bed yesterday about 10 a.m. He ws 43 years old, unmarried, and at the time of his death he was living with his mother, Mrs. Ella Starnes Bass on the Charlotte highway. Living in Fort Mill all his life, he formerly had been employed at the Springs mills as a watchman. He was known as a capable officer and his death came as a shock to his family and friends. The suicide was attributed to his bad health.
Coroner M. P. Nichols stated today that no inquest would be necessary. After a thorough investigation, the death was termed a suicide after consultation with the family, Coroner Nichols stated.
Funeral services were held today. Burial was in Unity cemetery in Fort Mill.
Besides his mother, Mr. Bass is survived by four brothers, Earl E. Bass of Lancaster; Frank E. Bass of Greenville, Oscar A. Bass of Baltimore, Md., and Howard G. Bass of Fort Mill; three sisters, Mrs. T.H. Ewart of Huntersville, N.C.; Mrs. C.E. Blankenship of Greenville, and Mrs. Lester Wright of Rock Hill.
