Obituary
John T. Bass was born January 18th, 1877, in Thomasville, Ga., and died in Galveston, Texas, Oct. 8th, 1897.
To us, who knew and loved the boy, these two dates mean so much. Separated, as they are, by not quite twenty-one years, they tell us the story of a busy, cheerful life, and a noble, sunny-tempered boy, now buried from our sight, but no from our hearts.
Young as he was, he had yet seen much of the real battled of life, and had passed through severe temptations, such as try the hearts of older men.
Three years ago, after his father?s death, the family moved to California, and while there, John contracted consumption and suffered much through the rest of his life.
He came to Galveston, Texas, in June, 1897, and while he seemed active and hopeful at times, his tale of life was already told; the disease was already too far advanced to look for human help.
Although a stranger in Galveston, John made friends of all who came near and saw the cheerful patience with which he bore his suffering.
Some days before his death he acknowledged the comfort of Christianity in his heart, and we who are left are thankful that the lamp of hope lighted the cark pathway each of us must some day tread alone.
His mother was in Atlanta, Ga., and quite ill herself at the time of John?s death, and it was pitiful to see how he longed for one more earthly glimpse of her face. He talked calmly and sweetly of death and passed away as gently as a child sinks to sleep.
The remains were taken to Thomasville, Ga., and buried beside his father and grandfather. His grandmother ministered to his last wants and felt that her prayers for the boy were answered, when she asked him if the way was clear and he answered with his last breath, ?yes, grandmother.? His cousin, Mrs. J.R. Morton, Galveston, Tex.
