Ridgeway Man Dies After Hit by Truck
J.D. Bass, 49, of Ridgeway, was instantly killed about 6 o’clock Saturday evening when he was struck by a 1955 Chevrolet truck while crossing Highway 21 just south of Ridgeway. A 30-year-old man, identified as the driver of the truck, is being held in Fairfield County Jail pending outcome of the coroner’s inquest.
Mr. Bass is survived by two sons, Edward Bass of Winnsboro, and Otis Bass of Ridgeway; one daughter, Mrs. Jessie Plante of Somersworth, New Hampshire; eight brothers and sisters; and a number of grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 3 o’clock this afternoon from the Presbytieran Church in Ridgeway, conducted by the Reverend Joseph Beale, pastor, and the Reverend Mr. Gardner. Interment will be in Aimwell Cemetery.
Active pallbearers will Herman McGill, Alvin Mattox, Alfred Perry, Edward Mattox, Harvey Peake and Milton Murphy.
Honorary pallbearers will be Louie Coleman, Joseph Crumpton, Robert Arntt, William Jackson, Gary Bass, Sr., and James Edmunds.
The body will remain at the Boney Funeral Home in Blythewood until the time of services.
Investigating the incident for the State Highway Patrol were Pat J.H. Faulkenberry and J.T. Anderson. Also, Fairfield County Deputy Sheriff Charles Medlin and County Coroner Davis Bouware.
