Alexis P. Bessette
Alexis Pierre Bessette, 87, of Columbia, died late Friday evening January 24, 2004 at the Coös County Nursing
Hospital in West Stewartstown following a long illness.
He was born on August 8, 1916 in St. Edwidge, Quebec, the son of Oliver and Angelina (Routhier) Bessette. Mr.
Bessette attended school in Canada, and was married to Jeannette Charest on June 1, 1943. Mr. Bessette worked as a
logger in Canada before moving to the United States in 1948. He purchased a dairy farm in Columbia, which he ran for
many years. Mr. Bessette was also a well-known North Country Christmas tree farmer.
Mr. Bessette is survived by his wife of 60 years, Jeannette Bessette of West Stewartstown; two sons, Germain
Bessette of Compton, Quebec, and Andre Bessette of Columbia; a daughter, Lorraine Routhier of Tempe, Ariz.; a brother,
Romain Bessette of Coaticook, Quebec; two sisters, Therese Comeau of Ottawa, Canada, and Fernande Cournoyer of Coaticook;
10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by six brothers, Laurent, Jerome, Roland, Albini,
Rosario and Fernand, and six sisters, Aurore, Claire, Olive, Cecile, Ruth and Alice.
Calling hours were held on Monday afternoon and evening, January 26, and on Tuesday morning at the Newman Funeral
Home in Colebrook.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Tuesday morning at St. Brendan's Church in Colebrook, officiated by
the Reverend Albert Bellefeuille. Burial will be in the spring at St. Brendan's Cemetery in Colebrook.
