1810 Census, Caswell Co, NC - Head of household of 3 free persons of color
26 Dec 1816, Person Co, NC - William Bass married Mahaley Goins with McFarland Oakly as
bondsman. The Goins family are a FPOC family that often intermarried with the Bass family.
1820 Census, Caswell Co, NC - William Bass head of household of one free colored male age
14-25, one free colored female age 26-44, two free colored males under the age 14, two free
colored females under the age of 14.
1830 Census, Caswell Co, NC - William Bass head of household of one free colored male age
36-54, one free colored female age 24-35, two free colored males ages 10-23, two free colored
females ages 10-23, two free colored males ages under 10, and one free colored female age
under 10. One of the two males under the age 10 is James Bass who was approximately 5
years old in the 1830 census.
1830/1840 - William Bass died sometime between the 1830 and 1840 censuses. According to
Chowanoke tribal historian and Bass descendant Douglas Patterson, when William Bass died,
his sons were apprenticed out to be shoe makers . This is why James Bass is found in the 1850
census living with a white family and learning the shoe making trade.
1850 Census, Caswell Co, NC - William Bass? widow Mahaley (Goins) Bass is still living and
head of household. Her son Barnett Bass and daughter Katherine (Bass) Bowers are living in
her household. Also living in her household is a man named Albert Piles .
