- In the name of God amen, I, Thomas Bass of the Parish of St Andrews and County if Brunswick being weak in body but of a perfect sound disposing mind .............. But as to my worldly Estate wherewith it has pleased the Almighty to bestow on me in this life I give and dispose of the same in
manner and form following.
I lend my beloved wife Mary Bass all my land in the southside of Great Creek and up Sandy Creek on the north side of Great Creek to the entry I bought of Duke to hold on the east side of Sandy Creek along with W...'s line, thence along Brown's line to the Great Creek, so long as she remains a widow or her natural life and it is my desire that my son Hartwell Bass shall have the liberty of working his hands on the land I lend to my wife Mary Bass and after her decease I give the said land unto my son Hartwell Bass and his heirs forever.
But should my son Hartwell Bass die without an heir lawfully begotten of his body then to descend to my son John Bass. I also lend unto my wife Mary Bass 3 Negroes namely Valentine, old Lucy, and Sall during her natural life or widowhood and at her decease I give the Said negroes Valentine, old Lucy, and Sall to Hartwell Bass and John Bass my two sons to be equally divided between them but not to be sold for a division.
I also give unto my son John Bass the land on the north side of Great Creek that is not already disposed of joining ....'s line and ....'s down to the Indian line. I also give unto my son John Bass 3 Negroes namely little Ralph, Will, and Harry and likewise a feather bed and furniture. I give to my son Hartwell Bass 3 Negroes namely Ben, George and Till? and a feather bed and furniture.
Item I give unto my son James Bass 4 Negroes namely Ralph, little Lucy, York and Binten. I also give unto my son James Bass 160 pounds to be paid in December 1787 likewise the bay horse he swapped for and the young yoke of oxen.
I give unto my daughter Tempy Warren two Negroes namely Suckey and Hampton and also the palliant mare.
I likewise give unto my daughter Elizabeth Green 4 Negroes namely Venus, Anell, and Creasy, likewise 2 cows.
I give unto my daughter Nancy Stainback 2 Negroes namely London & Amy also 4 head of cattle and 2 cows.
It is my desire that all my stock of horses except those that are disposed of should be kept on the plantation during the life or widowhood of my wife Mary Bass and after her decease to be divided equally between my 2 sons Hartwell Bass and John Bass. I give unto my sons Hartwell Bass and John Bass the land that was purchased of William Claiborne to be equally divided between them. It is my desire that half my stock of cattle should be sold and equally divided between Tempy Warren and Mary Stainback and the other half to remain on the plantation during the life of my wife Mary Bass and after her decease to be equally divided between my sons Hartwell Bass and John Bass.
It is likewise my desire that my son John Bass should have half the profits of the Mill and a Negro named Pompey which Negro I give with the Mill, and should my son Hartwell Bass refuse to let my son John Bass have half the profits of the Mill, then it is my desire that my son Hartwell Bass shall pay onto my son John Bass 150 pounds.
It is also my desire that should Hartwell Bass my son die without an heir lawfully begotten of his body then his estate all that I gave him shall descend to my son John Bass. Likewise should my son John Bass die without an heir lawfully begotten of his body, then all the estate I gave him descend to my son Hartwell Bass.
It is also my desire after the decease of my wife Mary Bass that all my estate that is not already disposed of shall be sold and equally divided between James Bass, Tempy Bass, Elizabeth Green, and Nancy Stainback and I constitute an appoint James Green, Benjamin Warren, Hartwell Bass and Thomas ..... to be my executors of this my last will and testament and I utterly disallow and disannull all former wills, Legacies and bequeaths by me heretofore made & bequeathing, ratifying & confirming this and no other to be my last will and testament. In witness whereof I have put my hand and seal the 7th day of April 1786.

This will was approved by the oath of Thomas Rivers, Benjamin Lane, and Peter Willis the witnesses thereto and ordered to be recorded on the motion of James Green and Benjamin Warren two of the executors therein named and they have and they having given bond with security and taken the oath according to the law, certificate is granted them for obtaining a probate thereof in due form.
