He is the son of John U. and Mary Jane (Stanford) Green. His paternal grandfather was James West Green, and his paternal grandmother Elizabeth (Bass) Green. On the other side, the grandfather was Robert W. Sanford and grandmother Anna Dow (Small) Sanford. Richard is of Scotch-Irish descent. He was educated by Prof. James Byars. On June 1, 1904, he married Nannie Bell Boyd. He is a member of the Masons, K. of P., the I.O.O.F., a member of the state legislature for two terms and served as assistant agricultural commissioner from 1903 to 1907. Also, he was a member of the Presbyterian church.
