Elisabeth Alberti Bass
Elisabeth Alberti Bass, 96, peacefully passed away on Saturday, July 24, 2004.
She was born Nov. 12, 1907, in Bristol, Va., to Louis Alberti and Harriet Daniels Alberti. Upon graduating in 1929 from Mount Holyoke College (Massachusetts) with a major in zoology, Elisabeth became a docent at the Worcester Art Museum. In 1931, she married Yale graduate, Dr. Shailer L. Bass and moved to Midland.
Elisabeth was a woman of wide-ranging interest: music, art, nature, travel, literature, history and the performing arts. In her early Midland years, she enriched her community by her memberships in Midland AAUW (founder), Midland Arts Council (founder), First Presbyterian Church, Family Service (taking in high school girls and training them in home arts), and welcoming displaced persons from World War II.
Many persons' lives have been empowered by Elisabeth's passion for humanity and the humanities. She welcomed into her home business associates from abroad, foreign students, neighborhood children, small meetings of community groups, listeners to the Metropolitan Opera broadcasts, and her extensive family and friends. She always found something to admire and embrace in each person she met. In her travels she spoke with many people who even now may be passing on her enthusiasm for life.
Elisabeth is survived by her seven children and their families, J. Dolf (Edith) of Webster, N.Y., Arlen of Paso Robles Calif., Jeralyn (Hans) Friedli of Boulder Colo., Brendon (Jean) of Lee, N.H., Heather Nutting of Midland, Derwin (Katherine R. Malzahn-Bass) of Midland, and Walden (Emily) of Syracuse N.Y. Her legacy lives on through her 12 granddaughters, two grandsons, and 10 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 25, 2004 at 3 p.m., at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Midland, 6220 Jefferson Avenue (at Wackerly). In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to the Little Forks Conservancy or to a charity of their choice. Memories of Elisabeth may be shared with her family by contacting Smith-Miner Funeral Home.
