Ransom Edward (Bud) Mansfield Bass Jr.
VIROQUA, Wis. -- Ransom Edward (Bud) Mansfield Bass Jr., 96, formerly of 517 East Jefferson St., Viro qua, died Saturday evening, July 28, 2001, at Vernon Memorial Hospital in Viro qua. He had been a resident of Vernon Manor Nursing Home since December 2000. He was born May 22, 1905, at Valley in the town of Forest in Vernon County to Ransom Edward Mansfield Bass Sr. and his wife, Myrtle Post. On March 8, 1941, he married Esther Mae Rood of Newton Valley. They lived in the Bud area at rural Viroqua and then farmed at West Lima for several years, until retiring to Viroqua in 1973. Bud, as he was known, will be remembered for his love of fishing, deer and squirrel hunting, braiding his rugs, and making windmills. He also took pride in his garden. Mrs. Bass died Nov. 6, 1980.
Bud is survived by two sons, Raymond (Sue) Bass of Hillsboro, Wis., and Arlen Bass of Kendall, Wis.; six daughters, Ramona (Jud) Downing of Viroqua, Mary Bass of Viroqua, Sadie (Howard) Burch of Hillsboro, Wis., Laura (Mike) Thompson of Kendall, Lorene (Bill) Crouch of Tomah, Wis., and Maxine (Tim) Thurow of Viroqua; and 33 grandchildren and 36 great-grandchildren. He also was preceded in death by three children, Wayne, Ransom III, and Karen and her husband, Stanley Grim; five brothers, Tom, Wesley, Dewey, Glen and Henry; and six sisters, Zennie, Vina, Esther, Mary, Dorothy and Lillian.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 31, 2001, at Thorson Funeral Home in Viroqua, with the Rev. Kemp Jones officiating. Burial will be in Forest-Burr Cemetery in rural Hillsboro. Friends may call at the funeral home today from 5 to 7 p.m. Friends also may call at the funeral home after 8 a.m. Tuesday.
