Raymond F. Bass
STERLING ? Raymond F. Bass, 77, of Sterling, died Saturday, Jan. 14, 2017, at his home.
He was born Sept. 13, 1939, in Centralia, the son of Archie and Opal (Case) Bass. He was a 1957 graduate of Rock Falls High School.
He served in the Navy from 1957 to 1963, and during that time spent 3 years aboard the USS Saratoga.
He married Ruth A. Hansen. She died Oct. 20, 1970. He later married Martha (Finch) Giblin on Sept. 11, 1971.
Ray was employed for 37 years at the former Northwestern Steel and Wire Co., retiring as a carpenter.
He loved, adored, and cherished his family, and stated often on how he never had any stepchildren ? they are all one family. He never said a harsh word about his children or family to anyone. Ray was a quiet man, enjoying country roads, woodworking in his back garage, snowmobiling, camping, hunting mushrooms, and gardening. He liked to talk about, and shared many stories of, his growing-up years in southern Illinois.
Survivors include his wife, Martha; children, Bernadette Giblin of Sterling, Jim (Joan) Giblin of Dixon, Terrie (Jim) Sampson of Harmon, Randy Bass of Highland, Indiana, Mike (Wendi) Bass of Deer Grove, Tim (Sandy) Bass of Mesa, Arizona, and Andrew (Kristi) Bass of Rock Falls; two sisters, Beverly (Paul) Schrader of Bemidji, Minnesota, and Linda (Jerry) Babb of Freeport; his brother, Murrell Bass of Sterling; 21 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and his faithful companion, "Bella."
He also was preceded in death his parents; his sister, Marietta Simmons; and his brother, George Bass.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at McDonald Funeral Home, 1002 12th Ave., Rock Falls. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home, with Pastor Dalmus Meeks officiating. Burial with military honors will be at Oak Knoll Memorial Park in Sterling.
