Lady Killed When Struck By Engine
According to reports received at the coroner?s office yesterday morning, Mrs. Nancy Bass of Trussville was struck and instantly killed Sunday night by an Alabama Great Southern engine in front of her home at Trusvville. Mrs. Smith?s body was carried 30 feet by the engine and was horribly mangled. Death was almost instantaneous.
The coroner was notified of the killing yesterday morning. He went to the scene to hold a preliminary investigation. It seems that Mrs. Bass was looking for her children, who had been near. The railroad track crosses the road near her home and she was walking down this when the engine struck her. There is a down-grade at that point and her body was either hurled or dragged 30 feet, according to the coroner?s measurements. He stated that there were no evidences of its being dragged.
The coroner states that he has evidence to show that the engine was not showing a light and did not whistle. The coroner will hold the preliminary investigation into the killing Thursday morning at 10 o?clock.
Mrs. Bass was 50 years of age and is survived by a husband, Robert Bass of Trussville, and six small children. The funeral services will be held thi morning at 11 o?clock from the home in Trussville. Interment will be in the Bass cemetery, with Woodin Y Co. in charge.
