      John first appeared in Eaglehawk arriving in 1853 on the "Marco Polo"
      with his John Bassett. He arrived with his wife and children on 24 Dec 1861 on
      the SS Great Britain.

      John Bassett was a miner. John and Martha arrived in Melbourne in 1861
      on the SS Great Britain. John was a local preacher and Sunday School teacher
      for the Wesleyan Methodist Chapel in Eaglehawk, Victoria, Australia.


      From the Bendigo Advertiser -
      "The Friends of the late Mr. John Bassett, of
      Sailor's Gully, are respectfully invited to follow his remains to the
      Eaglehawk Cemetery, This Day; funeral to move from his late residence at four
      o'clock."

      "This plaque has been laid to commemorate
      The arrival from Cornwall 140 years ago
      On the SS Great Britain 24 Dec. 1861 of
      Martha (Carbis) died 20 March 1882 and
      John Bassett died 24 Nov 1868
      At a Family Gathering in Eaglehawk
      They laid the foundation for our future"
