Lucile Bassett Rives
Lucy Rives, 85, passed away on Friday, December 18, 2009 at Mississippi Baptist Medical Center after a long battle with cancer. Visitation will be held at Alta Woods Baptist Church from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. today and 10:00 a.m. Monday, December 21, 2009 before the 11:00 a.m. funeral service at Alta Woods Baptist Church. Burial will be held at Lakewood Memorial Park following the funeral. Wright and Ferguson Funeral Home in Jackson is assisting with the arrangements.Mrs. Rives will be remembered as a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and great- grandmother, as well as an outstanding English teacher. But her greatest influence will be her lifelong service to her Lord Jesus Christ.Mrs. Rives was born in 1924 in Louin, Mississippi as the second of seven children to J. B. and Thelma Bassett. She attended Clarke Memorial College, and then graduated from Blue Mountain. After World War II, she married W. B. Rives and taught English at Good Hope High, Forest Hill High, Central High, and Provine High then at Wingfield High for 15 years. Upon her retirement, Mrs. Rives was active with the Mississippi Library Commission and spent a great deal of time with her grandchildren. Her most active role was as President of the Women's Missionary Union at Alta Woods Baptist Church. Under her leadership, the WMU was active in Baptist life statewide in missions' education and financial support of Southern Baptist missionaries in the US and abroad. Mrs. Rives is survived by her husband of 63 years, W. B. Rives; her children, Steve Rives and his wife Sue of Brandon, Cindy Coon and her husband Mark of Ridgeland, and Lisa Leavell and her husband Roland of Jackson; as well as her seven grandchildren and their spouses, Sarah Rives Otts and her husband Jason of St. Augustine, Florida, Jenni Rives Robinson and her husband J.D. of Raymond, Dan and Andrea Rives of Raymond, Anne Coon Albritton and her husband Michael of Canton, John Mark and Sharon Coon of Canton, Lucy Leavell and Ro Leavell of Jackson. She has ten great-grandchildren. She is also survived by two sisters, Mary Jo King and Faye McCormick of Louin, and one brother, Gene Bassett of Jackson, Tennessee. She is preceded in death by her parents, J.B. and Thelma Bassett, one sister, Bobbie Burt and two brothers, James and George Bassett. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be given to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering.
