Dennis Leon Bassett
Dennis Leon Bassett, age 87, of St. Johns and formerly of Prescott, Arizona, passed away peacefully on October 7, 2024. Dennis was a retired Master Sergeant in the United States Army, where he served with honor and distinction for nearly three decades.
Dennis was born on April 26, 1937, in Nebraska, one of five children born to Leon and Florence (McCan) Bassett. After completing high school, he proudly enlisted in the United States Army. Dennis was deployed to Vietnam and later stationed at the Pentagon. His dedication, leadership, and sense of duty were the hallmarks of his distinguished career.
It was at the Pentagon that Dennis met Patricia "Pat" Ailene Gallagher, an accomplished Army nurse and his future wife. They married on February 2, 1974, at the chapel affiliated with Arlington National Cemetery. Together, they shared a love for service, travel, and each other that spanned over 50 years. Their partnership led them to homes across Virginia, Alabama, Texas, Korea, and finally, their retirement homes in Prescott, Arizona, and St. Johns.
Throughout their life together, Dennis and Pat were devoted to supporting their communities. They hosted neighborhood block parties, fed the homeless, and participated in various veterans' events. An avid outdoorsman, Dennis particularly loved hiking the Grand Canyon and traveling with Pat. Their adventures took them all over the country in their motorhome and on cruises to Alaska, Vietnam, and beyond. They made it a priority to visit National Parks, with Oregon holding a special place in their hearts.
Dennis was known for his warm and giving nature. He was a loving husband and a friend to many. His generosity, compassion, and dedication to his country leave a lasting legacy.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Pat. Military honors and interment will take place at Arlington National Cemetery in the future.
