Elizabeth Bass, Wife of Renowned Engineer, Dies
Elizabeth Neil Bass, 87, who died Wednesday in University Health Care, led an exciting and energetic life of her own beside her late husband, Clark Neil Bass, a removed engineer.
Servces for Mrs. Bass, 917 Chancery Lane, will be at 2 p.m. today at Martin?s and Bracey-Welsh Funeral Home. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery.
She was an accomplished hostess and was instrumental in organizing serveral prayer breakfasts in the White House for former President Lyndon B. Johnson. She also hosted Eleanor Roosevelt?s visit to the TVA in Knoxville in 1937, and gave the first lady a tour of the facilities.
Due to her experiences with the presidential prayer breakfasts, Mrs. Bass became a member of Leadership Ministeries International, and internation Bible distribution company in Maryland.
She and her husband were members of the First Christian Church on Frankoin Road for many years. She was also a charter member of the Nashville Junior League.
Mrs. Bass, was born at Normany, Tenn., attended Tarbox Elementary School which graduated several members of prominent Nashville families.
Her husband, a civil engineer and former state highway commissioner under Gov. Austin Peay in the 1920s, was instrumental in determining the routing of many of the major highways now serving the state. He served for a time as the Knosville city manager and served as TVA?s chief conservation engineer fro m1937 until 1951.
Survivors also include a daughter, Betty Ann Norris, Greenwich, Conn; a sister-in-law, Oneida Bass, Nashville, and severn grandchildren.
