3 Persons Die In Manatee River
BRADENTON ? (AP) ? Three persons drowned in the Manatee River near here Saturday when their family outing in a 12 foot boat was upset by a wave, deputies reported.
A radio station executive camping nearby with his son rescued the other three persons, none of whom could swim, the sheriff?s men said.
The dead were identified as Noah Bass, 58, his wife, 54, and their granddaughter, Shelly, 5, all of Palmetto.
Deputies said the radio executive, Ken McKendree, manager of Bradenton station WTRL, jumped into the river with his son, Jack, and rescued the little girl?s mother, Mrs. Nancy Lee Bass, and her other two children, a boy 10 and a girl 8.
The McKendrees also recovered the bodies of the victims, deputies said.
The sheriff?s office said the family, none of whom could swim, was dumped into the river by a wave about 15 miles northeast of Bradenton near Ft. Hamer.
