      Griff Bass Shot To Death
By Bart Thrasher, the Bibb County Desperado
      Revenge For His Brother
Who Was Killed by Deputies is What He Wanted
Walked Into Blocton in Broad Daylight With a Pal.

Blocten, Aug. 12 ? (Special) ? Bart Thrasher, the noted desperado, returned from the Indian territory about a week ago evidently with the detmination of killing Bass, Sheriff Lathan and Deputy Montgomery.
This morning he walked into Blocton accompanied by his pal, who some say is his cousin, Newbern Thrasher, and others say was an outlaw from the west, entered the back door of Harvey?s drug store and, calling Griff Bass by his name, shot him through the heart.
Harvey grabbed the rifle just as Bass died and the pal raised his gun on Harvey, who died no know there were two of them, and he let go of the gun and the assassin fired the ball through Bass, who walked about fifteen steps and fell dead in Hutter?s store.
Thrasher and his partner left town in about the same direction they came. They had heavy rifles and plenty of cartridges. It was a bold deed.
Bass did not have time to draw his pistol. He was shot through the heart without a moment?s warning.
It seems that these desperadoes had some one to give them warning where Sheriff Bass was, as they came from the woods and went directly to the drug store and entered the back door about two or three minutes after Bass entered the front door.
Mr. Bass will buried tomorrow at Irondale, where his father lives. He leaves a wife and a number of children, one of whom is not expected to live.
Sheriff Latham, Bass, Montgomery and Cole of Jefferson killed young Thrasher last year and Bart is seeking revenge.
