The Rev. William "Bill" Harvey Bass Sr., 86, a lifelong resident of Oliver Springs, died Monday, July 11, 2005, at the Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. Born July 27, 1918, in Oliver Springs, he was the son of John Marvin and Elsie Chloe Bailey Bass.
Bill was a faithful member of Mineral Springs Baptist Church and had pastored several area churches, including Smokey Junction Baptist, Riverview Baptist, Graves Gap Baptist, Armes Chapel Baptist, Mill Creek Baptist, White Oak Chapel Baptist, Community Baptist Church and many others throughout the years. He was also a member of the Omega Masonic Lodge No. 536 F& A.M., and served the lodge as chaplain for many years.
He was a U.S. Army veteran who served his country during World War II. He received various citations, including two Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart for injuries sustained December 1944 in Belgium during wartime activity.
Bill was also an avid Atlanta Braves baseball fan who loved watching the games, especially when the team would win.
In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his wife, Lois Harness Bass; two sons, R.J. Bass and J.C. Bass; four brothers, Ervin Bass, George Bass, the Rev. E.H. "Hayes" Bass and Warren Bass; and a son-in-law, Glen Haney Sr.
He is survived by four sons, Harvey Bass and wife, Katie, David Bass, Jerry Bass and wife, Debbie, and Jeff Bass and wife, Rhonda, all of Oliver Springs; three daughters, Trula Justice and husband, Denny, Clara Ricker and husband, Dallas, and Amy Braden and husband, the Rev. Spanky Braden, all of Oliver Springs; his daughter-in-law, Carrie Bass of Oliver Springs; four sisters-in-law, Ozie Bass, Ruby Bass, Mona Bass, all of Oliver Springs, and Audrey Seeber of Strawberry Plains; and his brother-in-law, Dee Harness and wife, Mildred, of Ridgeville, S.C.
He is also survived by 22 grandchildren; 16 great-grand children; a host of beloved nieces, nephews, and extended family members; and special friends Ed Frost of Kingston, Steve Ivey of Oak Ridge, and Billie Monroe of Oliver Springs.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, July 15, 2005, at the Mineral Springs Baptist Church with the Rev. Mark Bass, the Rev. Charlie Marlow, the Rev. Don Daugherty, the Rev. Clyde Bass and the Rev. Spanky Braden officiating. The body may be viewed at the church one hour before the funeral.
The graveside service and burial will follow the funeral at the Mineral Springs Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, July 14, at Sharp Funeral Home with a Masonic service following the visitation at 8 p.m. in the chapel.
