Bertha Tieman

Bertha Tieman, age 96, of Sioux Falls, formerly of Madison, passed away on Wednesday, February 27, 2019 at the Edgewood Vista Assisted Living in Sioux Falls.
Funeral service will be 1 PM on Saturday, March 2nd at the Weiland Funeral Chapel. Visitation will be 5-7 PM on Friday at the Weiland Funeral Chapel with a prayer service at 7 PM. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the funeral service. Burial will be in St. Jacob?s Cemetery, rural Colton, SD.
Bertha Addie Bassett was born to Fred & Gertrude (Harms) Bassett at Little Rock, IA on January 9, 1923. She graduated from Dolton High School and moved to Parker, SD with her dad, brothers, and grandmother, following her mother?s passing in 1944. Before she was married, she worked as a waitress and cleaning lady.
In 1945, she married Arthur Tieman and nine children were born to them. She raised her family on a farm near Montrose. During this time, she did seasonal work at Wenk?s Foods for several years. One of Bertha?s true passions was being around children. For many years, she worked with her daughter, Melody at the Kids Korner Daycare in Madison. She was affectionately known to all the kids as ?Grandma T.? Bertha also worked at the after-school program in Madison specializing in crafts.
She moved into Madison in 1993 and made her home there until moving to Sioux Falls. Bertha became a resident of the Edgewood Vista Assisted Living in Sioux Falls in September 2017, where she not only spent the final joyful years of her life, but where she found great joy in ministering to the ?old people.?
Bertha is survived by eight children, Carole (Leroy) Mathieu of Sioux Falls, Linda (Ordal) Koeninger, Dave of Janesville, WI, Ronnie of Sioux Falls, Debra (Wendell) Gartamaker of Burnett, TX, Marla (Collin) Reynolds of Baltic, SD, Garry (Deanna) of Montrose, SD, Melody (Roger) Lentsch of Madison and Jan (Kristi) of Madison; 26 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and one more on the way in August; her two brothers, Gene Bassett of Belle Fourche, SD and Gib (Barb) Bassett of Sioux Falls, and a host of many friends. Over the years, Bertha had many dogs, but she will be truly missed by a special canine friend named ?Bucky.?
She was preceded in death by her parents; baby son, Gary Lynn; husband, Arthur and two brothers, Bob and Joe.
