Wiley Franklin Bass
Wiley Franklin Bass, at the age of 91, has gone on to greener pastures on January 9, 2007 at the Quail Ridge Assisted Living Center in Oklahoma City. Wiley was born in Allen, Texas on September 16, 1915. Wiley was preceded in death by his father, Robert Samuel Bass, mother Emily (Willis), four brothers, Alton, Lewis, Demps, Willis; and a grandson, Clyde Bass Jr. Wiley is survived by his wife, Juanita (Lyles) Bass; three children, Clyde Bass and wife Shirley of Oklahoma City, Bruce and Susan Bass of Wellston, Oklahoma, Beverly and Charles Elrod of Oklahoma City; many grandchildren; eleven great-grandsons; one great-granddaughter; a great-great-grandson born January 9, 2007; and a brother, Robert Lee Bass and his wife Shirley of Oklahoma City. Wiley is remembered for the Wiley Bass Nursery and Greenhouse. Wiley began his career at Fred Garlands Nursery in the early 1940's, later becoming a self-employed landscaper, working in all phases of the industry. Wiley drove a truck for Service-us Bakery for several years, before returning to his love of plants and opening the Wiley Bass Nursery and Greenhouse in Britton, Oklahoma. With his wife, Juanita at his side, he began to build his small business, and as it grew, he enlisted help from family members, first a nephew, Jon Bass, then followed by nephew, David Bass. His daughter Beverly joined him in 1979, followed by her two sons, Robert Hampton Jr. and Randy Hampton. The Oklahoma Nursery Association named Wiley "Nursery Man of the Year". Wiley employed many high school and college students at the start of each spring session. Van Brown was one that would go on to become an attorney and later become instrumental in Wiley's retirement and negotiating the sale of the nursery. Wiley took great pleasure in his business and the opportunity it gave him to sponsor a local little league baseball team named the "Dodgers". Wiley never missed an opportunity to watch his two grandsons, Robert and Randy Hampton play with the team. Wiley was proud when his daughter opened "The Oak Tree Nursery and Greenhouse" in Guthrie, Oklahoma. Two of his grandsons followed in his footsteps. Robert Hampton Jr. opened "Charter Oak Landscaping" and Randy Hampton began "H and H Lawn Service". Retirement was difficult at first, but he and Juanita purchased a cabin on Lake Tenkiller and they spent their days fishing, gardening, and riding two- wheelers with their neighbors. In 2002, Wiley and Juanita moved to the Quail Ridge Assisted Living Center, and enjoyed the help and company of the many youngsters employed there. Funeral services will be at the Demuth Funeral Home on Friday, January 12, 2007 at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family wishes that donations be made to City Hospice in Wiley's name at 3714 N. Portland, OKC, OK 73112.
