      Mary Virginia Bass Howard
      October 22, 1927 ? September 7, 2010

Mary Virginia Bass Howard passed away peacefully in her home on Tuesday at age 82. She was the eighth child born to Lora Flossie Murphy and William Murphy Bass in Denison, Texas. After high school graduation in 1944, she worked as a clerk-typist for the U.S. Department of Agriculture. During the post-WWII years, she worked as a secretary-stenographer for many high-ranking generals at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. In 1951, Mary married Jim E. Howard, Jr., an auditor for the U.S. Department of Defense. They resided in Fort Worth, Texas for many years. They had two children, Angela and Jimmy. The family transferred to Santa Clara, California in 1962 and Fairfax, Virginia in 1966 before settling in Austin, Texas in 1973. After her husband's death in 1977, Mary was fortunate to meet William "JB" Baugh one year later. They enjoyed 32 years of happiness and companionship before her death. They loved to dance, cook, and travel by car throughout small towns in Texas. They also took many adventurous and memorable trips out of state with family, neighbors, and friends. They looked forward to attending JB's WWII reunions of the Army Infantry 32nd Red Arrow Division, 127th Regiment every year. Mary's life became even more joyful after the births of her grandsons, Dennis (1994) and Dean (1992). She cared for them often during their early years, and continued to be very involved in their lives as they grew. She proudly attended dozens of their school events, including musical performances, sports competitions, art shows, and more. In addition to collecting and wearing hats, Mary liked to sew, draw, paint, and write in her daily diary. She cared for many pets and plants. She loved all types of music and dancing. She loved to prepare home-cooked holiday meals and celebrate birthdays with unique cakes she decorated herself. Survivors include her loyal companion of 32 years, William "JB" Baugh; son, James Earle Howard, III ("Jimmy"); daughter, Angela Jane Howard-Hicks; grandsons, Dean Hicks and Dennis Hicks; and former son-in-law, Jack Hicks. Mary is predeceased by her loving husband of 26 years, James Earle Howard, Jr.
