      ATHOL- Edward F. Bass, 74, of 351 South Royalston Road, died unexpectedly on Thursday, June 22, 2006 at Athol Memorial Hospital, after being stricken ill earlier at his son's home in Orange, following a long battle with diabetes. He was born in Rye, NH and grew up in Orange, MA, graduating from Orange High School in 1950. He was a son of Ira A. Berry and Velma H. WhiteBerry Bass and adopted son of William H. Bass. Ed served during the Korean Conflict in the United States Army as a Chef. He was Honorably discharged on October 16, 1954. He was married to Ruth H. Wilson on November 23, 1952 in Erving. Following the service, Ed worked for Amee Laundry in Athol, Athol Diner, Whit's Diner in Orange, and for Batchler's Garage in Athol for many years. Ed also worked as a mechanic and bus driver for E. H. Merrifield Bus Company in Athol, and the former Wright's Bus Line in Gardner, retiring in 1994. Ed loved to go deep sea fishing and relaxing at 14 Pulpit Rock Road They had five children; daughter, Patty Newell and her husband David, of Meriden, CT; sons, Boney Bass of Orange, Vernon Bass and his wife Kim of Warwick, and Tim "Trout" Bass and his wife Judy of Garden Grove, CA; his grandchildren, Moriah Bass Zamudio, Erin Bass Putney, Krystal Bass Baker, Cindy Hager Chassion, Zack Bass, Adam Bass, Corey Bass, Jamie Bass, Peter Newell, and Laura Clough; great grandchildren, Alex, Mykela-Marie, Isaiah, Norman, Joe Jr., Jennifer, and Aden; he was predeceased by a son, Richard Bass of Greenfield. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, June 29, 2006 at 1:00PM in Witty's Funeral Home, 158 South Main Street, Orange. Interment will follow in the Massachusetts Veterans' Memorial Cemetery in Winchendon. There will be a calling hour from noon to 1PM prior to the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to the Joslin Diabetes Center, One Joslin Place, Boston, MA 02215. Witty's Funeral Home, 158 South Main Street, Orange, is directing the arrangements.
