John Winton Bass Sr.
A native of McComb, Miss., and a resident of Denham Springs, he passed away at 9:55 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 15, 2008, at Ochsner of Baton Rouge at age 74. He was a devoted father, grandfather and a true man of God. He retired from Firestone of Denham Springs after many years of service. He was a member of Northside Baptist Church for more than 40 years and served on numerous committees. He was also a Sunday school teacher and Deacon Emeritus. He served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was a PARDS baseball coach. After his retirement he enjoyed helping out at Denham Springs Christian Academy with the bus, vans and cutting grass, and eating lunch daily at James' Grill. No words can describe his sense of humor. Visitation at Northside Baptist Church, Denham Springs, on Sunday, Aug. 17, was from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Visitation resumes at the church on Monday, Aug. 18, from 9 a.m. until funeral service at 11 a.m., conducted by the Rev. Richard White and the Rev. Keith McAllister. Burial in Evergreen Memorial Park, Denham Springs. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, John W. and Melessia Bass Jr.; daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Jay Smith; brother and sister-in-law, Wayne and Dobbie Bass; grandchildren, Stephanie and Robert Stroud, Tiffany and Britt Wright, Joshua Robert, Nathan and Esther Robert, Ryan and Nancy Robert; great-grandchildren, Hannah, David, Sean, Grace, Ethan and Elijah; special aunt, Juanita Sims; former spouse, Osene Bass; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, John Cockerham Bass; and mother, Lessie Doris Long Bass. "I'm finally going home to see Jesus." In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to Northside Baptist Church Building Fund. Arrangements by Seale Funeral Service, Denham Springs.
