      Rayford Brown Bass ?Poppa Bass?

      A retired manager of A&P Tea Co., he died at his home Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2000, after fighting cancer for three years. God sent his angel to tell him, ?Come and I will give you rest.? He was 77 and raised in rural Pike County, Miss. He was an honorably discharged U.S. navy air corps veteran of World War II. Survived by his wife of 53 years, Janie Parsons Bass; daughters, Patti McClelland and spouse Robert, Janie Gaynell Ables and sopuse Windy, Elaine McClure and spouse Terry, and Dana Christine Bass; a son, Mikal Ray Bass and spouse Mary; two sisters, Mildred Moak, McComb, Miss., and Madelon McManus, Clinton. He left 13 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Visitation was at Rabenhorst Funeral Home, 825 Government St., from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday. Visitation at Baker First Baptist Church, Groom Road, from 2 p.m. until religious services at 4 p.m. Thursday, conducted by the Rev. B.K. Miller. Burial in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens, Groom Road. Pallbearers will be his nephews, Harold Wells, Buddy Neal, Donald Lindsey, Robert Riley Jr., Robert Wells and Winton Bass. Honorary pallbearers are H.B. Billingsley and James D. Evans, whom he loved as sons. Special thanks to Dr. Wayne Gravois, Dr. Chris McCanless, Dr. Mike Hackler, Dr. Joseph Deumite, Dr. George McClelland, Dr. Mark Hausmann and all the caring staff at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center oncology unit, operating room and coronary care unit, and Debra Booth, our nurse, from Hospice. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Baton Rouge, 9063 Siegen Lane, Suite Q., Baton Rouge, LA 70810-1915.
