Private Bass Rites Sunday At Mot. Olive
Young Smithdale Solider Died In Korean Battle Nov. 5, 1951; Military Funeral Slated
Remains of Pvt. Ray Clifton Bass, who met his death in action against the Communists in Korea on Nov. 5, 1951, will be laid to rest near Smithdale Sunday afternoon in a full military funeral.
The body of the war casualty is slated to arrive in McComb on I.C. Train No. 3 Saturday afternoon, to lie at Hartman?s Chapel until 2 p.m. Sunday when services will be held from Mt. Olvie Baptist Church in the Smithdale community.
The local American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Organized Reserve Corps units will take part, and all members and other veterans are being requested to assemble at the McComb post office at 1 p.m. Sunday to attend and participate in the services.
Private Bass was wounded in action against the enemy in Korea on Nov. 5 and died the same day of his injuries. He entered the Army in March, 1951, and went into action in Korea about vfive months later.
He attended the Mars Hill schools in Amite County and was working for the New Orleans Public Service Commission before going into the armed forces. He was 21 years of age at his death.
Rev. C.C. Daniel, pastor of Mars Hill Baptist Church, will conduct funeral services.

The soldier left his wife, Mrs. Charlotte Hood Bass, Collins; his mother, Mrs. Mada Bass, Smithdale; two brothers, Hilton, Smithdale, and J.C., Mississippi State College; six sisters, Mrs. Rena Hosto, Chicago; Mrs. Vera Seals, Mrs. Eva Bass, Smithdale; Mrs. Neva Hennington, Summit; Mrs. Avis Freeman, Liberty and Mrs. Dorothy Whittington, Bogue Chitto, and man y aunts uncles and other relatives.
Burial will be in the Westbrook Cemetery with Hartman Funeral Home in charge of services.

PFC. Bass Of Smithdale Is War Casualty
Young Amite Countian Died Of Wounds Received Nov. 5 In Korean Action
Pfc. Clifton Bass, 21, of Smithdale in Amite County, met his death from wounds received in battle action in Korea on Monday, Nov. 5, his mother and wife were informed this week by the Department of Defense.
The telegram sent his mother, Mrs. Maeda Bass of Smithdale, told her only that her son was wounded in action against the Chinese-North Korean Communists on Nov. 5 and died the same day.
The wife of the slain soldier, Mrs. Charlotte Hood Bass of Collins, received a similar message.
The young soldier entered the Army last March and was sent into action in Korea in August.
He attended the Mars Hill schools, graduating from high school there before going to work for the Public Service Commission in New Orleans and, later, into the armed forces.
In addition to his mother and wife, Pfc. Bass leaves two brothers, J.C. and Hilton Bass, both of Smithdale; sis sisters, Mrs. Rena Hosto, Chicago; Mrs. Vera Seales, Mrs. Eva Thornton and Miss Neva Bass, all of Smithdale; Mrs. Avis Freeman, Liberty, and Mrs. Dorothy Whittington, Bogue Chitto, and manyother relatives.
