He was born in Fayetteville, N.C., and reared in Newton Grove, N.C. He was a graduate of East Carolina University in Greenville, N.C., earning a degree in fine arts. He was visual presentation manager for Thalhimers of Memphis and Charleston and most recently for Belk's, J.B. White and Dillard's in Savannah. He obtained his master's in religious education from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Raleigh, N.C. He was founder of Coastal Georgia Herb Society and a master gardener. He was a communicant of St. Thomas' Episcopal Church and a member of the choir. SURVIVORS: his wife, Mary C. Bass of Savannah; a son, Julian Colter Bass of Savannah; a daughter, Mary Eliza Bass of Savannah; his parents, Maddrey and Lottie Bass of Newton Grove, N.C.; a brother, Ray Bass of Galax, Va.; and several nieces and nephews. MEMORIAL SERVICE: 3 p.m. today at St. Thomas' Episcopal Church; a reception will follow. Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Drayton Chapel.
