Death of Dr. Robert E. Bass
One of the true and pure doctors of the olden time went to his reward on Monday when Dr. Bass was called away from earth. he was about 77 years old and only a brother and sister of his immediate family survive him.
Dr. Bass attended Hampden-Sidney College in the 50?s, rooming with his cousin, our honored townsman, C.C. Bass, Esq. He graduated in medicine before the war in the class with our Dr. White, to whom he was ever attached. He was a native of Chesterfield county, but spent the greater part of his life in this county near Rice.
Dr. Bass was a type of many and doctor, which alas, is fast passing. Modest, retiring, without guile or thought of compromise with wrong, he had to be known well to be understood and appreciated. While not demonstrative or conspicuous in his Christian life, men ?took knowledge of him that he had been with Christ.? His wide circle of friends lament his going, but sweet fragrance of his consistent life, like that of the godly pastors who have ministered to him, abides in that favored locality.
A great crowd attended his burial on Tuesday. His pastor, Dr. Shipman, conducted the funeral and a physician who ken him well, on request, added some timely words. He was a member of the Farmville Lodge of Masons and was buried with impressive services of that order.
