Jesse Edward Bass Jr.
1928 - 2022
Jesse Edward Bass Jr., affectionately known as Bass or Papaw Bass, of Coushatta, LA, passed away on Friday, May 6, 2022, at the age of 93. He was born in Many, Louisiana, on July 31, 1928, to Mary Jane Armstrong Bass and Jesse Edward Bass Sr.
He was one of 10 children, 4 brothers & 5 sisters; 8 preceded him in death. He is survived by his sister, Merlene Thompson, of Shreveport, LA. Bass graduated 11th grade and was a proud Veteran of the United States Air Force. He retired from a career as Master Chief with Santa Fe Offshore Drilling. His career took him to England, Holland, and Amsterdam.
He married Sammie Lewter on April 28, 1970, and they lived together in Coushatta along with Sammie?s four children: Brenda, Kathy, Billy, and Terry. From previous marriages, he had 8 children: Joan, Sheila, Dianna, Jackie, Gwen, Warren (Buster), Tommy, and Steve. There are 21 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.
His passion was playing his electric guitar and singing for any audience. There was rarely a time where he was without his guitar and a working amp ready to play you a song or ten. Some of his favorites were ?Okie from Muskogee,? ?Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain,? ?Jesus and Me.? Sharing songs and stories with his family was his favorite, and we will definitely miss his phone calls greeting us with ?Yello.?
He was a true country gentleman and often dressed in Wranglers and his cowboy hat. His bolo tie and boots meant it was going to be a good day for a concert.
Left to cherish the memories are: sister: Merlene Thompson and daughter Sheila Hammond; Children: Brenda (and Ed) Cottom, Billy (and Yvonnie) Dirks, and Terry Dirks; Grandchildren: Jason (and Tanya) Cottom, Brittney (and Josh) Trahan, Amanda (and Nathan) Powell, and Hannah (and Jake) Fayard; Great-grandchildren: Jackson and Aubrey Cottom, Garrett and Reid Trahan, Meredith and Emilia Powell, and Beckett Hiser.
Jesse was preceded in death by his wife, Sammie Bass, on March 25, 2019; his daughter, son-in-law, and grandson: Kathy, Cecil, and Wesley Bamburg; and his son Jackie Bass.
Services honoring Bass will be held Monday, May 9, 2022, at 11am at Rockett-Nettles Funeral Home Chapel with a graveside vigil held immediately after at Zion Cemetery. Brother Olan McLaren will officiate the services. Visitation will be from 10 A.M. until service time on Monday at the funeral home.
The family would like to thank Green Meadows Haven Nursing Home and St. Joseph Hospice for loving Bass as much as we do.
