Delno Bass
WEIR, Kan. - Delno Lee Bass, 79, Weir, died at 5:30 a.m. Thursday, May 1, 1997, at Mount Carmel Medical Center, Pittsburg, where he had been a patient for a week. He had been in failing health for several years. Mr. Bass was born Jan. 16, 1918, at Cardin, Okla. He attended Joplin, Mo., schools. He served in the Navy from 1945 to 1946. He was a labor commissioner in Kansas. He was chairman of the Governor's Commission on Manpower Planning. He moved from Topeka in 1975 to Weir, where he was administrator of the Office of Mined and Land Reclamation. He was a member of the Cherokee American Legion Post 35 and the Boilermaker & Pipefitters Local 664. He was a former business agent of what now is Operator Engineers Local 101. He married Helen Beck on May 16, 1939, at Vinita, Okla. She survives. Additional survivors include two daughters, Pat Neuenschwander, Fredonia, and Janet Wiglesworth, Shawnee Mission; a brother, Wayne Bass, Joplin; a sister, Nina Hobson, Joplin; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son. Memorial services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Bath-Naylor Funeral Home, Weir. Pastor James Shope will officiate. Private graveside rites will be at a later date at National Cemetery, Fort Scott. The body has been cremated. Contributions may be made to Youth Crisis Center of Parsons, in care of the funeral home.
