C. Bass Killed On 301 Friday In Car-Truck Wreck
Clayborn Bass, young Halifax man, was killed instantly at an early hour Friday morning, May 31, when the care he was driving collided with a large truck loaded with potatoes. The accident occurred on Highway 301, a mile out of Weldon.
Other occupants of the car, J.C. Jafford of Halifax and Mrs. W.E. Cox of Roanoke Rapids, were taken to Roanoke Rapids Hospital, where they were treated for minor injuries and released.
Coroner T. M. Cooper was called, but upon investigation deemed an inquest unnecessary.
The driver of the truck, Earl Cleve of Vanceboro, and his assistant told Coroner Cooper they saw the car coming toward them on their side of the road as it was attempting to pass two other trucks. In an effort to avoid a head-on collision, Cleve said, he pulled partly off the highway. The car struck the truck body back of the cab, tearing off the whole side of the car, which proceeded several feet down the highway, turned over and completely around, the coroner said.
This is Halifax County?s second highway fatality this year. The other fatality occurred when Perry Brown, negro, was killed on 158 about 5 miles east of Littleton in late February.
Bass is survived by his wife; a four-year-old son; his parents, Mrs. and Mrs. W. G. Bass; a sister, Miss Louise Bass, and two brothers, J.H. and W.G. Bass, Jr.
