  Notes	Commonwealth, Scotland Neck, NC, Thursday, June 18, 1914 Mr. Calvin Bass Dead Mr. Calvin Bass, aged about 70 years, and a highly respected farmer living near Lawrence church about seven miles south of Scotland Neck, was seized with a sudden attach of heart trouble Wednesday morning, while plowing in the field, and died before any assistance could reach him. Mr. Bass? wife preceded him to the grave a few years ago. He leaves five children, all of who have the heartfelt sympathy of the community. The funeral was held from the residence Thursday afternoon and the interment was made in the family burying ground. Charlotte Observer, North Carolina, Saturday, June 13, 1914 Death Record, J.C. Bass Scotland Neck, June 12 ? Special. Mr. J.C. Bass, Confederate veteran, about 73 years old, dropped dead in his field, about eight miles south of here, Wednesday afternoon about 5 o?clock. Mr. Bass was in his usual good health and had been at work all day. He ate a hearty dinner and returned to the field when the hour came for the others to go to work. He was plowing at the time he fell and in a few minutes the hands at work in the same field noticed he was down. They hastened to him, but found that he was dead when they reached him. Mr. Bass was a gallant soldier and was engaged in several of the most noted battles in the Civil War. He distinguished himself many times for his bravery, and was several time highly complimented by his superior officers.
