Gaston Ray Bass
Gaston Ray Bass, a former business executive for Bass Pecan Co., died Wednesday at Christwood Retirement Community. He was 83. Mr. Bass was born in Lumberton, Miss., and lived in Covington for the past year. He was a graduate of Lumberton High School in Mississippi, where he was valedictorian, and of the University of Mississippi, Aspen Institute and Iowa State University. He was a former employee of the New York Central Rail Road, Grenada Mississippi Hospital and Bass Pecan Co. He was a member of Gold Kist Pecan Growers, Pearl River Farmer Cooperative, MFC Cooperative, National Pecan Council, Southeastern Pecan Growers Association and Mississippi Pecan Growers Association. He was a member of Lumberton Citizens Hospital, Southern Nurserymen Association, American Association of Nurserymen, Mississippi Nurserymen Association, Phi Kappa Alpha Fraternity, Lions Club and the Hattiesburg branch of the American Red Cross. He was an Army veteran of World War II. Survivors include his wife, Caroline Jane Roberts Bass; two sons, Ivan Kirl Bass of Ashland, N.H., and Roberts Ayraud Bass of Winston-Salem, N.C.; a daughter, Cassandra Jane Bass of Columbia Falls, Mont.; a sister, Nell Elizabeth Eubanks of Biloxi, Miss.; and seven grandchildren. A memorial service will be held today at 11 a.m. at Lumberton United Methodist Church on West 11th Avenue. Burial will be in Lumberton Cemetery. Bagnell & Son Funeral Home handled arrangements.
