SABBATUS -- Veronica 'Vicky' (Bassett) Breton, of Sabattus, lost her courageous battle with Pulmonary Fibrosis on July 7, 2011, while at home with her beloved husband, Marcel H. Breton. The daughter of Fred and Grace (Mosher) Oickle, Vicky ws born in Debec, New Brunswick on Jan. 23, 1925. She attended schools in Nova Scotia and Old Orchard Beach, and earned her GED from Portland High School at the tender age of 70. In August of 1942, she married George Bassett. Together they raised four children while residing on military bases in Bermuda, Libya, Wichita, Kan., Limestone, and eventually retired to Falmouth. Regardless of where her journey took her, Vicky had a knack for making her home a favorite gathering spot for family and friends. At her home, everyone was welcomed by her endearing smile, her meaningful hugs, and more goodies than one could possibly eat! She was known to all as a selfless lady that always spoke highly of others. She was always willing to lend a helping band, whether leading a local Brownie troop, or helping those in their times of need. Vicky truly showed her family the meaning of 'unconditional love.' Her genuine concern for others and her many acts of kindness and generosity earned her the deepest love, respect, and admiration of her family and friends. After many years of service, Vicky retired from Mercy Hospital in 1983, but retirement didn't slow her down. She was a member of the Toast Mistress Club of Portland as well as the Red Hat Society. Her hobbies were endless and she was happiest when in the company of family and friends. She was so creative, and loved surprising loved ones with gifts that she had hand crafted. Her beautiful quilts and gingerbread houses consistently earned her top prizes at the Cumberland Fair. She loved making handbags, playing cards, doing puzzles of all kinds, and cooking at all hours of the night. She was predeceased by her husband of 58 years, George Bassett; two young sons; and her sister, Delores Amberman of Nova Scotia. After George's death in 2000, she was lucky enough to meet Marcel. They spent their years together wintering in Bonita Springs, Fla., playing cards, going out dancing the night away with friends, and taking trips to Hollywood Slots, where Vicky enjoyed hours on the 'Penny' one arm bandit penny slot machines! She is survived by her husband, Marcel H. Breton; her four children, Janet Kimball of Bonita Springs, Fla., Joyce Murphy of Brewer, Richard Bassett and wife Debbie of Cumberland, George Bassett and wife Germaine of Sweden; step sister, Royetta Flynn and husband David of Aurora, Miss.; step-daughter, Rose Elwell of Topsham; grandchildren, Kelly Inverso and husband Anthony, Kyle Bassett and wife Deborah, John and Steven Bassett, Vicky Lakeman, Steve and Scott Helstrom, Sean and Nicole Murphy; and nine great-grandchildren.
