Bernice K. Bassett, 94
WESTBROOK -- Bernice K. Bassett, 94, formerly of Westbrook, passed away at Gosnell Hospice of Southern Maine in Scarborough, on Jan. 30, 2008.
She was born in Waterville, the daughter of Charles E. and Katherine Leahy Bassett. She was raised in Westbrook, graduating from Westbrook High School, Gorham Normal School and Gorham Teachers College. She taught in Westbrook for a few years ad then moved back to Beverly, Mass., where she taught first and second grades for 11 years.
She returned to Westbrook to complete her 38 years of teaching at the Valentine Street and Forest Street schools. She retired from teaching in 1972. She then worked for the Porteous and Jordan Marsh department stores. After retiring from thoseobs, she kept busy doing volunteer work. For 14 years, she was a tour guide at the Victoria Mansion in Portland. She especially enjoyed conducting children's tours.
She was a member of the Westbrook-Warren Congregational Church, Maine Teachers Association, Westbrook Women's Club, Women's Literary Union, Westbrook Historical Association and the Westbrook Senior Citizens. She enjoyed traveling throughout te United States, including Hawaii, and Canada.
She was predeceased by her sisters Margaret Bassett and Thelma Cornell Strout. She is survived by nephews Peter and John Cornell, and a niece, Dr. Catherine Cornell.
Memorial services will be held at the Westbrook-Warren Congregational Chuch, 810 Main St., Westbrook, on Monday, Feb. 4, at 1 p.m. Arrangements are by the Chase Funeral Home in Westbrook.
Memorial donations may be given to the Westbrook-Warren Congregational Church.
