Edward Roam Bass (Includes Picture)
COLUMBIA ? Edward Roam Bass, 88, of Columbia, SC, passed away December 8, 2007. He was born in Rocky Mount, NC, and married Mildred Agnes Haithcock, his sweetheart of 67 years, in 1940. During World War II, he worked in the shipyards of Wilmington, NC, building Liberty Ships. He later joined the Army and moved his family to Columbia and made it their permanent home. After getting out of the Army he started his own business, Bass Specialties. He was a High Priest in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and at the ages of 82 and 80, Ed and Mildred served a twelve month mission in Washington State. He has actively served in many different capacities in his church and community and has always been a good example to others through his life of service.
He is survived in death by his dear wife Mildred and seven of their eight children: James Edward Bass, Davis Ashley Bass, Wilma Ruth Bass, Kenneth Allison Bass, Mary Janis Bass, Bonnie Bass Gibbons, Brian Keith Bass, plus 27 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren. He is also survived in death by his sister Peggy Bass Young, and two brothers, Ray Coye Bass and Thomas Eugene Bass. He was predeceased by his daughter Ann Bass Elkins, his parents Jerry Roam Bass and Ellar Ardealier Ellis Bass, two brothers Marvelin Isaac Bass and Lee Roy Bass, and one sister, Margaret Louise Bass. Ed?s warm heart, loving devotion to his family, friends and church, along with his precious sense of humor will be missed by all who knew him.
The family will receive guests Monday evening, December 10, from 6:00 to 8:00 at Greenlawn Funeral Home, 845 Leesburg Road in Columbia, SC. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, December 11, at 11:00 a.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 4440 Jackson Boulevard, Columbia, SC, with burial to follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park on Leesburg Road.
Serving as pallbearers will be Kirk Bass, Kevin Bass, Adam Bass, Zach Bass, David Bass, Keith Fowler and Gary Fowler. Member of the High Priest Group will be honorary pallbearers.
Memorials may be made to the Humanitarian Fund of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 4440 Jackson Boulevard, Columbia, SC.
