Tennis Bass Funeral Wednesday
Funeral services for Tennis Vernon Bass, 55, of 2516 N. Knoxville Ave., who died at 12:35 p.m. Monday at St. Francis Hospital from an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound in the head, will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Gauss memorial Chapel.
The Rev. Ralph E. Jasper of the Forrest Hill Avenue Methodist Church will officiate and burial will be in Swan Lake Cemetery.
Friends may call at the memorial chapel after 4 p.m. Wednesday.
Owner and operator of the Bass Radio Communications Service at the home address, Mr. Bass also was supervisor of radio communications for the Illinois State Police headquarters on Mt. Hawley Rd., but had been on sick leave from that post for about six months. He also had been in charge of radio communication for Peoria County and for some of the local taxi firms.
Coroner Horace Payton, who will set an inquest later, said that Mr. Bass apparently shot himself through the right side of his head with a .25 caliber automatic pistol shortly before noon while in his basement office at this home.
He had had Coffee with his wife shortly before going to the basement. A 10-year-old stepson, Jerry Hammond, who was on the first floor, heard a shot and went to the basement to investigate. Finding his stepfather in a pool of blood on the floor, the lad then went to a neighbor?s home to summon help and to the shop at the rear of the residence where two men were emplo9yed and where Mr. Bass had been working earlier in the morning.
Removed to the hospital by ambulance, Mr. Bass died about 15 minutes after admittance.
A Peoria resident for 16 years, he was born at Hot Springs, Ark., April 16, 1906. He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Elvie Bass and married Mrs. Dorothy Redding Hamilton. He was a member of Peoria Lodge 15, AF&AM; Peoria Consistory, Scottish Rite, and Mohammed Temple Shrine.
Surviving are his wife; three daughters, Mrs. Shari Alden, Mrs. Beverly Ryan and Miss Toka Bass, all of Peoria; three stepchildren, Carl Hamilton, Jerry Hamilton and Rita Hamilton, all at home; one brother, James Bass of San Diego, Calif., and two grandchildren.
