      Joel Bass

      Joel was born in Kirbyville, Texas to Rev. C. B. Bernard and Doris Louise (Center) Bass. He passed away following a fifteen-year battle with leukemia.

      After retirement from teaching thirty five years at Sam Houston State University, Joel was awarded the title of Professor Emeritus for his distinguished career teaching physics, science methods, and various education courses in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. During several of those years, Joel served as Program Coordinator of Elementary Education and chairman of the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. Some of Joel's other professional contributions include serving as President of Phi Delta Kappa, obtaining twenty four grants for the University, conducting, science education workshops for practicing teachers in the summers and serving on the SHSU Faculty Senate. Joel co-authored three editions of a college textbook titled Teaching Science as Inquiry. The book is used in over 100 universities across the Untied States. Scientific and cultural subjects fascinated Joel. He was especially interested in archaeo-astronomy and became involved in analyzing ancient Native American petroglyphs in Lewis Canyon near Sanderson, Texas. Based on his studies of this site, Joel co-authored a book titled Lewis Canyon Petroglyphs. Following his interests in science and culture, Joel and his wife, Helen, visited many aquariums, Native American sites, and natural wonders across the United States.

      Survivors include Helen, his wife of forty seven years, son Richard (Ricky) Bass, son Randal (Randy) Bass, daughter-in-law Sarah Bass, and grandson Austin Thomas Bass; brothers and sisters-in-law include Linda Bass, Charles Daniel Bass and Martha Bass and John David Bass and wife Julie. Nieces, nephews, great- nieces, and great-nephews are also part of Joel's surviving family.

      Joel's parents and his brother Billy Gerald Bass preceded Joel in death.
