      Mrs. C.B. (Doris) Bass

      Services for Mrs. C.B. (Doris) Bass, 96, of Lufkin, will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday in the Elwyn M. Gipson Memorial Chapel in the Garden of Memories Memorial Park with Dr. Charles D. Bass and Rev. Aubrey Knox officiating. Interment will follow in the Garden of Memories Memorial Park.
      Mrs. Bass was born March 28, 1908, in Coleman, Texas, the daughter of the late Lula R. (Smith) and John Daniel Center. She died Saturday, January 1, 2005, in a Lufkin hospital.
      Mrs. Bass attended school in Coleman and Santa Anna, Texas, graduating from high school in Santa Anna in 1926. She attended Howard Payne College in Brownwood and Southwest Texas College in San Marcos. She then taught school for several years, her first school being a rural, one-teacher school. In 1930, she married a young preacher, Rev. Bernard Bass. They spent the next 42 years in a church parsonage, busy in civic and church activities, and raising four sons, Billy Gerald, Charles Daniel, Joel Eugene and John David. The churches Rev. Bass pastored were the West Orange Baptist Church in Orange, First Baptist Church of Deweyville, Old First Baptist Church in Orange, First Baptist Church of Kirbyville, First Baptist Church of Silsbee, First Baptist Church of Anahuac, and the First Baptist Church of Diboll. He also served as an Associational Missionary in Jasper, Texas, and was Interim Pastor of several East Texas churches after his retirement.
      During her years of church and civic involvement, Mrs. Bass served as District 3 WMU President for 6 years; was on the State WMU Board for 8 years; and served as Worthy Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star, Silsbee Chapter #298.
      In 1972, Rev. Bass retired from the First Baptist Church of Diboll, and they moved to Lufkin and became active members of Lufkin's First Baptist Church. Mrs. Bass taught the Anna Sunday School Class for 15 years and served on various committees. She also served as president of the Senior Adult Ministry. Reverend Bass preceded her in death in 1977.
      Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Billy G. and Linda Bass of Ocean Springs, Mississippi, Dr. Charles D. and Martha Bass of Monument, Colorado, Dr. Joel and Helen Bass of Huntsville, John David and Julie Bass of Spring, Texas; ten grandchildren; fourteen great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Dell Seaberry of Weatherford, Louise Center of Gustine, Texas; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
      In addition to her husband and parents, she was also preceded in death by her sister, Agnes Lovelady, and sisters-in-law, Zelda Bass and Jewel Bass.
      Memorials may be made to the Missions Fund at Lufkin's First Baptist Church, 106 E. Bremond, Lufkin, Texas 75901.
      The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Monday evening at the Gipson-Metcalf Funeral Home.
