Mark 50th Wedding Anniversary
The golden wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. C.E. Bass will be observed quietly Sunday at their home, 408 South Randolph street, when their children and their families will gather for a dinner party. mrs. Bass has been in poor health for a number of years and for that reason ?open house? will not be held. However, they will be glad to welcome friends Sunday afternoon from 3 to 5 o?clock.
Mr. and Mrs. Bass are native Virginians. He is 80 years old, having been born in Appomattox county on March 31, 1863. Mrs. Bass is 73 years of age and was the former Anna Lyle Thornton, daughter of. Sr. and Mrs. John L. Thornton of Republican Grove, Va. She was born Oct. 24, 1869, in Halifax county. Mr. and Mrs. Bass were married June 21, 1893, in the home of the bride?s parents. The remaining living member of the wedding party is Mrs. Berth Maloney of Brookneal, Va.
Mr. Bass? birthplace was on a farm eight miles from Appomattox court house, where General lee surrendered in the Civil war. The cannon shot fired in the battle could be heard plainly at the Bass homestead. Mr. Bass started his railroad career in may, 1884, when he took employment as a car inspector on the Chesapeake & Ohio at Camelton, now Montgomery, W.Va. In this line of work, he also died some firing on engines. In 1886, he was transferred to Clifton Forge, Va., as a freight fireman between that town and Charlottesville, Va. The C & O was building a new line at the time on the bank of the Ohio river from Ashland, Ky., to Cincinnati, including a bridge over the Ohio at Cincinnati. Mr. Bass went to Cincinnati and operated a hoisting engine for D. Shanahan & Co. contractors for building the bridge, and he handled every stone used in building three of the supporting piers. When traffic opened on the division he returned to firing and was assigned to fire the Fast Flying Virginian between Huntington, W.Va., and Cincinnati.
Mr. was promoted to engineer in 1890. He resigned his position with the C&O in 1892, and went to Somerset, Ky., as an engineer for the Cincinnati, Northern and Texas Pacific railroad. It was in the town of Somerset that he and his young bride went to housekeeping. In 1896, they moved to Kenova, W.Va., where he entered the services of the Norfolk & Western railroad as an engineer.
Mr. and Mrs. Bass came to Garrett Dec. 19, 1898, and for more than 30 years he worked in various branches of service of the Baltimore & Ohio. He retired in 1926 because of injuries received in an accident.
Mr. Bass is a charter member of the Flutwood lodge No. 424, Brotherhood of Locomotive Fireman and Engineers of Covington, Ky., and served as its first secretary and second master. He joined Division No. 163, Brotherhood of Railroad Engineers in 1893, and is still a member. He became affiliated with the Masonic order in 1890, and has been a member of the R.A. chapter and the Commandery since 1891. He is a charter member of Garrett chapter, R.A.M.
Mr. and Mrs. Bass have been residents of Garrett since 1898, with the exception of two years when he had a passenger run out of Willard. They have resided in their present comfortable home since 1901.
For many years Mr. Bass? hobby was raising bees, but he now stated his hobby if ?keeping house.?
Mr. and Mrs. Bass were the parents of seven children. A son Richard, whose home was in California, died in 1934 following a major operation. The other children, all of whom will be at the family residence Sunday, are: Mrs. B.R. Wineland of near Lisbon, Noble county; Robert E. Bass of St. Louis; Mrs. L.G. Simpson of Willard; Edawrd Bass of Kansas City, Mo.; Mrs. W.H. Holmes of Bryan, O., and Mrs. W.K. Williams of Cleveland. There are 13 grandchildren: Evelyn, Roberta, William and Joseph Wineland, Mrs. Harry Deutman and James R. bass of St. Louis, Dickie and Virginia Lu Simpson of Willard, Barbara Ann and Jacqueline Holmes of Bryan, Douglas Williams of Cleveland and Beverly Ann and Carol Mae Bass, children of Richard Bass, who live with their mother in California.

C.E. Bass Will Be 84
Mr. And Mrs. C.E. Bass
Charles E. Bass of 408 South Randolph street will reach the extreme age of 84 next Monday but he does the housekeeping and the family shopping and is active all the time. Mrs. Bass is 76 and she has been a semi-invalid for the past ten years. They have been residents of Garrett for nearly half a century.
Mr. Bass was born Mch. 31, 1963 in Appomattox county, Va., only eight miles from Appomattox Court House, where Lee surrendered to Grant two years later, ending the Civil war. Mr. Bass was a son of Dr. and Mrs. I.E> Bass and corn, tobacco, cotton and peanuts were raised on their 360 acre farm. Striking out from the farm when he was 21, Chas. Bass became a car inspector for the Chesapeake & Ohio at Coal Vally, W.Va. Then he went to Clifton Forge, Va., as a fireman for the C. & O. and then to Covington, Ky., in a like capacity. He was promoted to engineer in 1890. He went to Somerset, Ky., in 1891 and to Kenova, Ky., in 1896 as an engineer for the Norfolk & Western. He came to Garrett in 1898 when he became a freight engineer for the B. & O. He was hit by a freight car in 1926 at Willard and was disabled for further duties. He was placed on the pension rolls.
Mr. Bass is the last survivor of a family of nine brothers and sisters. he and Anna Thornton were married Virginia June 21, 1893, and became the parents of eight children. One, Joseph Holmes, died at the age of 13 months and another, Richard, died at the age of 30. The others are Mrs. B.R. Wineland of six miles northwest of Garrett, Mrs. E.R. Simpson of Willard, Mrs. W.R. Holmes of Bryan, O., Mrs. W.K. Williams of Cleveland, O., Robert E. Bass of St. Louis, Mo., and John Edward Bass of Kansas City, Mo. The number of grandchildren is 14 and there are four great grandchildren.
Mr. Bass was a charter member of the lodge of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Fireman & Engineman at Covington, Ky., and served as its first secretary and second master. He has been a member of the Garrett division of the B. of L.E. since 839 and of the Masonic order since 1890.
