Family Feud: Written by Kay Banish
It happened in November of 1926. It happened at my home at 270 E. Lucy
St., St. Paul, MN. I just turned eleven, so remember the day well. It was a
Sunday afternoon, and the whole Bassett family was gathered together for the
reading of Grandma Melissa Nash Bassett's last will and testament. My father
was the oldest of the children, so Uncle Vincent Nash, Grandma's brother, had
sent the will to him. I remember we were all gathered together in the library
of our old home, and we kids were all ears-kids had to be quiet in those days.
The will began with love to all her children, little gifts of rings, pins, and
wrist watch - one item to each of the oldest grandchildren in each family.
That left us kids out. And then came the cash. Grandma had a cash amount of
$600. Dad read on: "And to each of my two oldest children, Frank and May, I do
hereby bequeath the sum of $200 because they have supported me in the past and
helped out when I was in need. To my younger children, Eva and Walter, I do
hereby bequeath the sum of $100 each."
Wow, the room erupted. Uncle Walter, his face as red as fiery r
hair, screamed and swore at everyone present, grabbed Emily, his wife, told
his kids to get the .... out; and they all went, slamming the door hard behind
them. He never talked to my Dad civilly or allowed us kids to play together
after that. He and my Dad were in business together - they owned and operated
the Capital City Carpet Cleaning Company on Maria Avenue in St. Paul. Dad left
the business to Walter who ran it with his sons for several years after.
