      Sister Mathilde Joseph (Beatrice) Bessette
      1912-2007

      Sister Mathilde Joseph Bessette (Beatrice), 95, beloved member of the Sisters of St. Joseph for 78 years, died on Tuesday December 25, 2007 at the Mont Marie Health Care Center in Holyoke. A native of New Bedford, MA, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Mathilde (Millette) Bessette. Sister entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of LePuy in Fall River, MA from St. Joseph Parish, New Bedford. The Sisters of St. Joseph of Fall River and the Sisters of St. Joseph of Springfield merged in 1974. Sister attended New Bedford High School and was graduated from Novitiate High School, Fall River in 1930. She earned a B.A. Degree from Rivier College, Nashua, N.H. and a degree in Library Science from Bridgewater State College, MA. Sister ministered in education as teacher/principal at Blessed Sacrament School and St. Roch School, Fall River and as principal at S. Jean Baptiste School, Fall River; St. Joseph School, and T. Therese School, New Bedford. Sister served as Assistant Provincial from 1959-1964 and as Provincial Superior of her Congregation from 1964-1970. In her later years, she served as Appointment Driver and Assistant Bursar at the Fall River Community. She retired to Mont Marie in 1992 where she served in the Finance Department and in the Development Office. In addition to her Sisters in Community, Sister is survived by her nephews, Dr. Russell Bessette and his wife Claire of Mattapoisett, MA and Dr. Normand Bessette and his wife Jessica of Camarillo, CA, and her nieces, Pauline Bessette Ramos and her husband Frank of New Bedford, MA and Rochelle Bessette of Redmond, OR. The wake will take place at Mont Marie, 34 Lower Westfield Road, Holyoke on Friday December 28th from 2:00 pm to 4:30 pm with a Prayer Service at 3:00 pm. The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held in the Mont Marie Chapel on Friday December 289th at 5:00 pm. Burial will follow in Mont Marie Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sisters of St. Joseph, Mont Marie, 34 Lower Westfield Road, Suite 1, Holyoke, MA 01040-2739. Arrangements are entrusted to the Sampson Family Chapels in Springfield.
