Elvy Bass
Mr. Elvy Bass, 76, a long time Giles County educator, died Saturday, November 7, 1987, at Hillside Hospital after a long illness. Funeral services were conducted Sunday, November 8, at Bennett May Chapel with the Reverend Larry Glass and the Reverend Paul McKinney officiating. Burial was in the Minor Hill Cemetery. A native of Giles County, Mr. Bass was the son of the late Henry and Minnie McCree Bass and was married to Kathleen McMasters Bass who survives. He was a graduate of Middle Tennessee State University and taught school in Giles County for 41 years, serving as principal at Liberty Hill Elementary, Powell Elementary, Prospect High School and Minor Hill High School. He taught one year in Alabama at Rogersville High School. Mr. Bass was also a basketball coach, having coached several elementary teams to the county championships. Mr. Bass was a long time member of the Giles County Court, serving as magistrate for 15 years from the late 1940's to the early 1960's. He was a deacon, men's Sunday School teacher, song leader and choir director at the Minor Hill Baptist Church. He served as a song leader and choir director for over a half century at the Minor Hill Baptist Church. Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two daughters, Martha Ruth (Sis) Bass McCord of Murfreesboro and Elaine Bass Brown of Titusville, Florida; two sons, Billy G. Bass of Athens, Alabama, and David (Bud) Bass of Lawrenceburg; four sisters, Mrs. Maggie Newton, Mrs. Ora Bridges, Mrs. Velma Paysinger and Mrs. Mary Parsons, all of Giles County; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and 24 nieces and nephews.
