Dr. A.C. Bass Passed Away
Died Late Last Night After an Illness of Two Years
After an illness of two years of Bright’s Disease, Dr. Archibald Cleghorn Bass died at the Rankin House last night at 12:35 o’clock. During his long illness he received the best of attention and medical treatment, but it all proved unavailing. He was for a long time in a sanitarium in the north and more recently went to Hot Springs, Arkansas, in the hope that the treatment there would prove beneficial. The hoped for relief did not come, however, and recently when he returned to Columbus, accompanied by a Columbus physician, his friends realized, sadly, that he had come home to die. Those who were familiar with his condition will not be surprised at the announcement this morning of his death, although their sorrow will be none the less keen.
Dr. Bass was born 49 years ago, in this city, and was a resident of Columbus all his life. He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Bass, who were so prominently identified with Columbus for such a long period of time. He attended Bellevue Hospital Medical College in New York City in 1880, and upon his return began the practice of medicine in his native city. In recent years Dr. Bass spent a good deal of time at his plantation south of Columbus. He had large property interests in and near Columbus, and gave a good deal of time and attention to his planting interests. Dr. Bass was of quiet, modest, almost retiring disposition, and his qualities were appreciated best by those intimate friends who were associated with him most closely. A prominent minister of Columbus, who was actively identified with charitable and philanthropic work, remarked a year or two ago that he never went to Dr. Bass with a request for aid for any deserving person, or any of his charitable plans, that he was not given prompt and generous assistance.
The deceased is survived by a sister, Mrs. James A. Lewis, an aunt, Mrs. Oliver P. Poe, and a number of nephews and nieces in Columbus and Charlotte, North Carolina.
The funeral will probably take place at some hour tomorrow.
