Judge J.A. Bass
Judge J. A. Bass was born in Greene Co., GA, October 10, 1828; died in Athens, TX, June 30, 1912, age 83 years, 8 months and 20 days. Was married to Miss Caroline McMillan, February 21, 1849, to which union four children were born, one only surviving him. His wife died and he was again married to Miss Ann Olivia Johnson on October 18, 1857, to which union nine children were born, seven now surviving, three sons and one daughter being present at his death. He made his home in Carrollton, GA for over forty years and was a consistent member of the M. E. church for thirty-eight years, his membership still remaining there at his death. He loved his native state and was always so glad to meet anyone from there. After the death of his oldest son who resided in Carrollton, GA., also, his health seemed to fail him so rapidly until he decided to sell his old home where he had lived happy so long and come to his sons in Texas where he had every attention that loving hands and hearts could render for the past twelve months. The funeral services were held at the residence of his son, J. M. Bass, of this city at 4 o'clock on July 1, 1912. Services were conducted by Rev. W. F. Davis, pastor of the M. E. church, assisted by Rev. R. W. Benge of the Presbyterian church. A large concourse of friends followed the remains to the city cemetery where they were laid to rest. His wife, eight children, 21 grandchildren, and eleven great grandchildren, two sisters and one older brother still survive him.
