Homer Eugene (Gene) Bassett (Picture included)
(1935-2017)
HOUSTON, TX: Homer Eugene (Gene) Bassett passed away from this world on February 25, 2017 at 5:30 a.m. at the age of 81 in Sugar Land (Houston), Texas, with his family surrounding him. He had his wit right up until the very end. He was an incredible man, and larger than life.
He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Carol June Allen Bassett, and their children Jeffery (Jacquie), Terri Dawn Blanchfield (Ed), Steven (Shannon) and Bradley (Dina), along with their 15 grandchildren, Doug, Dave, Mike, Diane, Travis, Trevor, Heather, Hunter, Braden & Dakota Bassett, and Nicholas, Tyler (Lauren), Erica, Logan and Connor Blanchfield. He also had 4 great grandchildren, Tristan, Abigail, Ryan and Dillan Bassett.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest & Katherine Elizabeth Bassett, and sisters Ida Mae Bassett Cox, Donna Faye (infant) and Ruby Theodosia (infant), as well as many aunts and uncles.
Gene was born March 16, 1935 in Coshocton, Ohio. He was a medic in the Air Force for 4 years in the 1950's, got his Engineering Degree in Chicago, and worked for Cooper Bessmer in Mt. Vernon, Ohio and transferred to the Houston office in 1980. He then went to Marchem, followed by Cook-Manley, until he retired. After he retired, he work as a self-employed contractor for CPI, a London based company where he and Carol visited often. He was extremely passionate about his work, and had 5 patents, and was developing several more. His brain never stopped, but his body shut down from pneumonia.
He loved to build and fly large model airplanes in his spare time, and after he retired.
He was a member of the Masons, the American Legion, HAM Radio Society, as well as a Veteran.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, March 3rd at 2:00 p.m. at Parkway United Methodist Church, 5801 New Territory Blvd. in Sugar Land, Texas. Everyone is welcome, and a reception will be held following the service.
