Couple Divorced After 43 years of Matrimony, SPIRITUALISM CAU
Melissa A. Bassett, 64, and Walter S. Bassett, 70, divorced after 43
years of married life by Judge F.N. Dickson, district court, toda
Mrs. Bassett testified that she lived happily with her husband for
nearly 40 years. Then he took to drink, she said and frequently came ho
intoxicated, beat and choked her.
The husband filed an answer to his wife's complaint for divorce,
alleging that in 1904 his wife took up Spiritualism, and from that time on
they could not agree. The husband, however, did not appear to contest t
divorce.
WIFE SAYS OPPOSITE IS TRUE.
"it is entirely to the contrary," says Mrs. Bassett on the stand when
asked by Judge Diskcon if the allegations in her husband's answer were true.
"He was the one who took up Spiritualism and made me attend the
meetings with him and filled our house with Spiritualistic literatur
Mrs. Bassett testified that she had not seen her husband for two
years.
