Margaret Powell Bass
Margaret Powell Bass went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Saturday the 29th of February at her home on 410 Montezuma street in Andalusia, Alabama. She was born, raised and lived in Andalusia her entire life.
Margaret was a former Tax Collector of Covington County for 19 Years. She was appointed by Governor George Wallace in 1972 and then was elected into office for 3 remaining terms. Margaret was a member of the Andalusia Pilot Club where she served in many offices. She was always very active in the annual Pancake Breakfast where she and her husband Durwood probably cooked thousands of pancakes and sausage over the years. Margaret and Durwood were also in charge of the Life Alert program which the Pilot Club supported for many years.
Margaret's pride and joy were working and being in charge of the Nursery Department at Southside Baptist Church for 40 plus years. She loved and rocked all the babies and then the babies of their babies. Some of the young men she took care of are the Pall Bearers in honor of her today. They are Clint Veasey, Keith Pittman, Jamie Hawkins, Jeffrey Hawkins, Jason Hawkins and Jacob Dunn. She was a big supporter of her church, serving on many committees, sang in the choir, member of the WMU, Senior Adult Luncheons, and a large supporter of the many projects to raise funds for the church's new building.
The most important thing to Margaret was her family. She loved and supported them in every activity they were involved in. Husband, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren alike. She and Durwood were at all the baseball games, football games, basketball games, band concerts, chorus concerts, beauty pageants and the list goes on. The family always knew they could depend on her and Durwood if they ever needed them. They loved them all so much and never expected anything back in return.
Margaret was always giving and loving to everyone she met. She was always smiling and her smile could calm the greatest hurts and fears. Her hugs made you feel pure comfort, peace and joy.
She will truly be missed by all her family and friends.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday March 3rd at Southside Baptist Church with Dr. Mike Yopp and her son-in-law, Rev. Gary McCurley officiating the service. The interment will follow in Andalusia Memorial Cemetery. Tim Willis and her grandson, Joshua McCurley will provide special music for the service.
Margaret is survived by her two daughters Cynthia Bass Powell (Reggy) and Sue Bass McCurley (Gary); 6 granddaughters Melissa Johnson Newsome (Adam), Joy McCurley Stovall (Jeff), Cyndie McCurley, Adah McCurley, Andrea Powell Walker (Joshua) and Haley Powell Capps (Brian); two grandsons Brian Johnson and Joshua McCurley (Megan), and 15 great-grandchildren; Forrest Babington, Brantley Newsome, Bailey Johnson, Adeline ,Torin, Evangeline, and Cullen McCurley, Aidan and Ethan Stovall, Malachai and Adam Tucker, Brecken Walker, Bethany, Brayden and Brodie Capps; and a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews all of who loved her very much.
Margaret was preceded in death by her husband Edwin "Durwood" Bass Sr., son Edwin D "Eddie" Bass Jr., parents James Arthur Powell and Georgia Greathouse Powell, 4 sisters Estell Wall, Alice Walters, Ruth Nation, Clara Powell and brother Marcus "Buck" Powell.
The family wishes to thank Mrs. Bass's caregivers, Linda Adams, Alma Pitts, Leisha Ellison, Amy Jones, and Vickie Davis for the wonderful care and the love shown to their mother.
